School's Out for Summer

This academy is a great opportunity for high school students seeking experience as young journalists. Students will participate in an intensive six-week workshop reporting and writing articles and personal essays, taking photos and/or making videos about various issues impacting their lives and those of their peers. The students' work will be published on the Columbia Links multimedia Web site and in our student magazine R_Wurd. Classes are conducted on a real college campus with real reporters and one-on-one mentoring with Columbia College graduate students. Teens will be paid a weekly stipend and supplied with public transportation passes to get to and from campus.

The Dow Jones News Fund sponsors an intensive five-week summer high school journalism workshop on the campus of Columbia College Chicago to promote careers in journalism, particularly among students who may have faced barriers to practicing journalism and pursuing careers in news fields. Students will be reporting stories and writing personal essays. They will also be using cameras and Flip videos as needed. Their work will be published on the Columbia Links multimedia Web site and in our student magazine R_Wurd. Classes are conducted on a real college campus with real reporters and one-on-one mentoring with Columbia College graduate students. Teens will be paid a weekly stipend and supplied with public transportation passes to get to and from campus.

Who is eligible?


You. . .

* Must be between 14 and 24 at the time of the application.

* Must live in the city of Chicago with a valid mailing address.

* Must have a Social Security number or a number that is legally allowed to replace a social security number for the purposes of employment.

* Must provide a guardian’s signature for applicants under the age of 18 at the time of application.
