Pauline Day: Multi-Tasker
An interview with current Columbia Links student, Pauline Day

After just two days of being in the program, Pauline is upbeat. “I feel good. I think this program will help me figure out if journalism is something I want to do when I get older,” she explains. A native of Chicago, Pauline gives me background on herself and her future plans. Since she is currently an editor of her school newspaper, her insight into the news happening now is pretty precise. Determined and organized, Pauline plans to become a TV news producer as well as a print editor-in-chief.
“How did you find out about the Columbia Links program?” I asked. “I saw an announcement about it at school so I became interested…” she tells me. “I’m not really sure why I joined, I guess because I’m the editor of the newspaper at school.” Unsure of what to write about, she acknowledges, “I like to write editorials.” Editorials, she says, are far more interesting than regular articles because they allow people to express themselves more.
Did you hear? John is joining the army. Why? He needs money. He wants money. He wants to go to college. Makes sense. The army will pay for his college. ROTC says its simple. Plus, the army is great. They defend our country. They are heroes. There is no danger. High school made it look fun. Two years and you are done, no debts, no struggles, easy entry. Should be easy enough right?

MAGIC (Metropolitan Area Group for Igniting Civilizations) , a community organization to raise awareness on the necessity on youth programs, is asking the government to pay up 8 billion dollars to fund teen jobs nationwide- not your typical job I may add.
MAGIC promotes jobs that focus on career building rather than actual manual jobs that are often considered the norm of teen employment.
